A gathering-space concept for The Book Loft. Capacity and arrangements will be confirmed as plans develop.

A book club needs a place where everyone can hear each other, settle in and feel comfortable staying for a conversation. At Tarkington House, our plans for The Book Loft begin with a table among the books. We are developing the upstairs bookstore as a place for reading and discovery, with room for small gatherings in Butler-Tarkington.

What is planned for The Book Loft?

The current design brings stained-wood bookshelves beneath the eaves, comfortable seats around an oval table, and a separate sofa-and-armchair reading corner. The loft is planned above the coffeehouse and creamery, overlooking the ice cream parlor. See The Book Loft’s design and collection.

We envision book clubs, small meetings and creative workshops, as well as private gatherings and celebrations. The space is still being developed. Opening is planned for spring 2027; capacity, availability, pricing and event arrangements have not been announced.

What to consider when choosing a book-club setting.

Start with the size of your group and the kind of meeting you enjoy. A discussion with eight regular readers has different needs from an author conversation with guests. Think about how long you usually meet, whether a shared public space suits you or you need a private arrangement, and how food or drinks might fit into the afternoon.

Access matters too. Because The Book Loft is upstairs and the renovation is still being planned, please tell us about any mobility or other access needs when you inquire. We will discuss the arrangements as those details are confirmed.

Tell us about your group.

If you would like to explore a future gathering, email jewels@tarkingtonhouse.com. It helps to include:

  • Your group’s name and a little about the occasion.
  • An approximate number of guests.
  • Your preferred timeframe and whether you meet regularly.
  • Any access needs or particular arrangements you would like to discuss.
  • The best way for Julie to reach you.

These conversations help us understand what neighbors hope to find here. An inquiry expresses interest; it does not reserve a date or confirm that an arrangement is available.

For authors and artists.

We are also planning opportunities for readings, signings and local artwork. If you would like to share your work, visit the authors and artists section and send an introduction with links or samples. Programming will take shape as the opening approaches.

For the address, current opening plans and answers to common questions, see the Tarkington House visitor guide. We look forward to learning what your group has in mind.
